Looking For a Good Tai Chi School?

kitten kungfu.jpgI sometimes find it amusing when I hear students talk about how much better their school, discipline, etc. is than anyone else’s.  It’s human nature for us to feel this way and I must admit I’ve done it myself in the past.

I also find this practice a bit sad.  Why, you ask, do I find this sad?  I find it sad because it usually means the student is insecure with who they are and what they know.  This is not a reflection of the school unless the teacher fosters this attitude.  When I meet someone who is obviously self-confident and doesn’t feel the need to have the world agree with them, then I know this person is on a good path.

While there are plenty of good schools, and some not-so-good schools, it’s the ability of the student that really determines the level of skill.  The teacher plays a big part, but the student plays a much bigger part.  If you’re looking for a good school spend a little time researching, to locate one that fits your needs; spend the rest of your time looking within.  ;-)

In the words of the infamous Master of Duhism, Bob Tzu:

“If you get in a fight with an atheist, expect to get punched in the faith.”

Your thoughts?

“…students talk about how much better their school, discipline, etc. is than anyone else’s…”

I had to live a little bit before I learned to qualify such sentiments with “for me!” What a lesson when we finally learn the actual value of most of our opinions!

I see your point.
Another thought: Why would you study at a school that you think is not the best?

Walt,

So true! Our opinions have a great deal of value… to us. It can be a difficult lesson to learn. Sometimes I still have to remind myself of this.

Laoshi Miriam,

That’s right, why would we study at a school we didn’t think is the best? After all, look at the school where I study. Seems to me that I learned this lesson somewhere. ;-)
